The Burlington School District will be using the Eureka Math Curriculum (formerly Engage NY). Within this curriculum, first graders will be learning about the following topics this year:
September and October- Sums and Differences Within 10
November and December - Introduction to Place Value Through Addition and Subtraction Within 20
January- Ordering and Comparing Length Measurements as Numbers
January and February- Place Value, Comparison, Addition and Subtraction to 40
March- Identifying, Composing, and Partitioning Shapes
April and May- Place Value, Comparison, Addition and Subtraction to 100
In grade 1 mathematics there are 4 major topics:
1. Developing an understanding of addition and subtraction and strategies for addition and subtraction.
2. Developing an understanding of whole numbers and place value, including grouping in tens and ones.
3. Developing an understanding of linear measurement and measuring lengths as iterating units.
4. Reasoning about shapes and composing and decomposing shapes.
This is not an inclusive list of all topics in first grade but the emphasis that other topics support.
We will focus on building good math habits and attitudes this year in first grade!
The habits and attitudes guide students in their studies and create an environment where students feel comfortable taking risks, making mistakes and growing as mathematicians.
I can be creative
I can ask questions
I can make connections
I can always try my best
I can explain my math thinking
I can take risks and make mistakes
I AM A MATHEMATICIAN!
